Packing Tips for Making Your Move Smooth

What could possibly be more fun than packing up everything you own, then unpacking it somewhere else? If you’re like most people, your answer might be “what isn’t more fun?”

But it doesn’t have to be that way. At the Storage Project, we’re all about embracing your creative side when it comes to tucking your stuff safely away, whether you’re moving across town or across country.

Want to make your move as enjoyable as possible? Read on for three ways you can make the packing and unpacking experience – dare we say it – fun:

Start with the right packing playlist.

Yep, you heard us. Pick the right music when you’re packing! Choose songs that make you feel motivated, whatever that looks like for you. Maybe it’s an uptempo dance mix made up of 70s classics, maybe it’s an album of pop anthems, or maybe it’s a collection of jazz pieces from the greats.

If a song makes you feel like getting things done, add it to the list. This musical fuel will come in handy when you don’t feel like packing another box.

Remember that when it comes to packing for a move, less is more.

Ever feel like your stuff is weighing you down? You may not realize it, but if you’re like most people, you’re likely to accumulate a lot of unwanted things over your lifetime. A move can serve as the perfect chance to start with a clean slate and a clean house.

So, where to begin? We suggest starting with the smallest room in your house and going through it top to bottom. Make a pile for things you want to sell, a pile for things you want to donate, and a pile of things you want to throw away. As you move from room to room, put the piles into boxes, and make it a priority to take them where they need to go.

When you’re deciding what to keep, be selective! Think about the items you want to take with you to start fresh in your new home. Is the item a necessity, and if not, is it something you love? If you don’t need it, and you don’t love it, chances are that you can stand to get rid of it.

Pro packing tip: Give yourself the freedom to hang on to items of sentimental value by making a special place for them. Weathertight and airtight storage containers are a great way to protect more fragile items, and they allow you to make the most of your space.

Moving into a smaller home and don’t have room to store everything you want to keep? Renting a secure, self storage unit can be the perfect solution.

Take breaks from your packing.

Some of the best advice we’ve ever gotten: never underestimate the power of taking breaks. Seriously! Packing for a move can be overwhelming, and short, 20 minute breaks can help split up your day and keep you refreshed. Use that time to take a walk outside, stretch, pet your dog, or catch up on your knitting. Whatever you do, take a deep breath and step away.

When you get back to packing, you’ll have fresh start and a clear mind. What could be better?
